A hands-on shadow puppet workshop for ages 6+ to create creatures, explore storytelling, and perform a mini show using light and shadow.
This playful and hands-on shadow puppet storytelling workshop invites children aged 6+ to create their own animal and creature puppets while exploring storytelling through light and shadow. Participants will design imaginative characters, experiment with movement and performance, and work together to bring their stories to life in a fun and welcoming environment.
Creativity, collaboration, and play are at the heart of the session, with plenty of opportunities for children to invent, explore, and express themselves. The workshop will conclude with a super cute mini shadow puppet performance where participants can share the puppets and stories they have created together.
Extra info: This workshop is designed for children from 6 years of age. This is a drop-and-go workshop, parents/carers are encouraged to remain close by and attend the performance at the end of the workshop.

Artist Bio: Bria McCarthy creates art for theatre, literature, film and education, specialising in experimental puppetry. She created the ‘Shadow House’, a textile sculpture shown at the Art Gallery of NSW and the National Museum of Australia. She was the recipient of the 2024 Wear it Purple Foundation Grant with her new puppet show in development and her solo show ‘Dragon Hearts’ won the 2023 Sydney Fringe Award for Best Emerging Artist. She was the 2022 ACE Indigenous Artist Resident, and her debut manuscript was shortlisted for the 2022 Text Prize. She is an autistic artist with Wiradjuri and Irish heritage. Her work is characterised by an emphasis on multispecies storytelling, neurodivergent imagination, and it is always a little magical.
