Drawing from the Dobell with Pam Vaughan

A playful exploration into the ‘24th Dobell Drawing Prize’, using mixed media, be inspired to experiment and develop your visual language.
Contemporary drawing practice as reflected in the 24th Dobell Drawing Prize, on exhibition Sat 26 Sep to Sun 22 Nov, includes works made using traditional processes alongside others created through an expanded range of techniques and media.
Developed in connection with the exhibition, this workshop offers an encounter with drawing as a responsive, playful and exploratory practice. Using pencil, charcoal, chalk pastels, ink, collage and paint, participants move between observational, experimental and abstract approaches, with an emphasis on staying in contact with the drawing as it develops rather than moving too quickly to resolution or fixed outcomes. Attention is given to how different ways of looking and making affect what emerges, supporting the recognition and development of an individual visual language.
Bring with you: 1 x A3 pad of cartridge paper and a still life object.
Extra info: Participants will produce a small body of work reflecting their process over the weekend. A visit to the exhibition before the workshop is encouraged. While drawing materials will be provided, participants are invited to bring favourite drawing media.
Artist Bio:
Pam Vaughan works primarily in drawing and printmaking, exploring animals, landscape, and a conversation about ‘aliveness’. Her practice is shaped by an interest in Sumi-e painting, the poetry of Mary Oliver, mindfulness practice, and ideas drawn from contemporary physics research. She approaches mark-making as a physical and energetic extension of the body. Pam’s exhibiting activities include a national printmaking award, being a finalist in the Sulman, Dobell and Kedumba Drawing Awards. She has taught extensively across community and education settings, including at Sydney University and the National Art School.
